Abraham was 75 years old when he was called by God. God promised Abraham that he will make him a father of many nations and that his wife Sarah will be the mother of nations. God also promised Abraham that he will have a son. (He named Isaac)
The Three Visitors
The Lord appeared to Abraham while he was sitting by his tent. When he looked up, he saw three men standing by him. Abraham quickly went from his tent to meet them and bowed to the ground. Abraham offered them something to eat and hurried back to his tent to tell Sarah to prepare a meal.
While they were eating, the visitors told Abraham by this time next year that Sarah will have a son. Sarah was listening inside the tent and when she heard this, she laughed in her heart because she thought that they both were too old to have children. But the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say 'Will I really have a child now that I am old?'" Sarah became afraid so she lied and said, "I did not laugh." But he said, "Yes, you did laugh." But as time went on, around the same time the next year, Sarah gave birth to a baby boy just as the Lord said she would. His name was Isaac.
God Test Abraham
When they came to their destination, Abraham said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey. My son and I will go over there and worship. Then we will come back to you.” Abraham took the wood for the sacrifice and gave it to Isaac to carry and Abraham took the knife.
As they were walking to their destination, Isaac said to Abraham, “Father!”
Abraham answered, “Yes, my son.”
Isaac said, “We have the fire and the wood. But where is the lamb we will burn as a sacrifice?”
Abraham answered, “God will give us the lamb for the sacrifice, my son.” When they came to their destination, Abraham built an altar, laid the wood on it, and tied Isaac up. Then Abraham laid his son, Isaac on the wood on the altar. Next, Abraham took the knife and was about to kill Isaac.
Sometime later when Isaac was older, God tested Abraha's faith by telling him to go and take his only son to the land of Moriah and there offer him as a burnt offering. So early that morning Abraham got up, cut some wood for the sacrifice and took his son and two servants to go to the land of Moriah.
Then an angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven and told him not to kill or hurt Isaac. The Lord saw that Abraham was obedient to him. When Abraham looked up, he saw a sheep's horn caught in a bush. He took the sheep and made a sacrifice to the Lord. When he was finished, he returned to his servants and they all went home.
